Review: Toshiba HDA3 Upconversion DVD/HD-DVD Player

I just purchased the Toshiba HDA3 Upconverting DVD/HD-DVD player for $99 and so far I'm very happy. (To learn more about upconverting DVD and what it means you can read my post on the subject.)

I read reviews about the load time being too long and the disc tray being hard to open. So far I've found that DVDs and HD-DVD take around the same time or a few seconds longer to load as compared to my standard DVD player, and the disc tray is fine. The picture quality is excellent, and it's hard to tell the difference between an upconverted widescreen DVD and an actual HD-DVD. In fact, I'd say the quality is very close. I am using a $45 HDMI cable, and while I am no video expert, I'm quite happy with the picture. The unit comes with the Bourne Identity and the 300 HD-DVDs in the box. The remote is solid and the buttons are clear.

As an aside, I also found it very helpful that the power cord is not attached to the unit, so I was able to easily feed the plug around to fit in my home theater, and then plug it into the power strip and the player.

So if you are looking for an HD-DVD player (and I assume you are doing so to upconvert), then this player is a great choice.

To read about why I bought an HD-DVD player after the format war was won by Blu-Ray, check out my post on the subject.
