I require a contract for every website I build or agree to maintain. Most clients understand the need for a having a contract, but some want to know why. This article will explain the benefits of requiring a contract when you deal with someone who is building or maintaining your website.
Having a contract...
1. Allows you and the developer to know exactly what the specifications are of the site you are going to build. If you have the details in writing there is a much higher chance that you will get what you expect. If nothing was written down, you have very little backup when you tell your developer, for example, that you expected the site was going to have a red background, when it was actually designed in green.
2. Ensures you have due dates that are reasonable and meet expectations. Web sites take a long time to develop and build, and a contract ensure that you know when you will be getting your site.
3. States all fees up front. You want to know the price ahead of time and also to know that the price won't be changed later.
4. Lets you know what's included, but more importantly what's NOT included. Most web developers require separate agreements for web site hosting, search engine optimization, and maintenance. Be sure you know what you are getting.
There's a lot more that goes into a web contract and this list just scratches the surface. The most important factor when working with someone in designing or maintaining a web site is to strive for great communication, and to get the details and expectations in writing!
